ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে মুসলমানদের বস্তুগত ও আধ্যাত্মিক অবদানের প্রসঙ্গ উল্লেখ করতে গিয়ে প্রখ্যাত মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী লেখক ড. স্যার উইলিয়াম হান্টার বলেন :

The Musalmans led several of these great land reclamation colonies to the southward, and have left their names in Eastern Bengal as the first dividers of the water from the land. The sportsman comes across their dykes, and metalled roads and mosques, and tanks, and tombs in the loneliest recesses of the jungle; and wherever they went, they spread their faith, partly by the sword, but chiefly by a bold appeal to the two great instincts of the popular heart. The Hindus had never admitted the amphibious population of the Delta within the pale of their community. The Muhammadens offered the plenary privileges of Islam to Brahman and outcaste alike. 'Down on your knees, every one of you,' preached these fierce missionaries, 'before the Almighty in whose eyes all men are equal, all created beings as the dust of earth. There is no god but the one God, and His Messenger is Muhammad.' The battle cry of the warrior became, as soon as the conquest was over, the text of the Divine.¹

“মুসলমানগণ দক্ষিণ অভিমুখে প্রাপ্ত বহুভূমিতে নতুন আবাদী গড়ে তুলেন এবং পূর্ববঙ্গেও সমুদ্র থেকে শুকনো ভূমিকে পৃথক করে কৃতিত্ব দেখান। কোন পর্যটক যদি উল্লিখিত অঞ্চল সমূহ পরিভ্রমণ করেন তাহলে আজো প্রত্যন্ত বনজঙ্গলে জলাধার, মসজিদ, পাকা সড়ক, বেড়ি বাঁধ, লক্ষ্য করবেন। তাঁরা যেখানেই গেছেন ধর্ম প্রচার করেছেন আংশিক তরবারীর সাহায্যে এবং প্রধানত মানব প্রকৃতির দু'টি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সহজাত প্রবৃত্তির সাহসী আন্দোলনের মাধ্যমে। হিন্দুরা গঙ্গা বদ্বীপের উভয় তীরে বসবাসরত জনগোষ্ঠীকে ভ্রাতৃত্ববোধে আকৃষ্ট করার চেষ্টা করেনি। মুসলমানগণ ব্রাহ্মণ-অচ্যুৎ নির্বিশেষে সব মানুষের সামনে ইসলামের সামাজিক সাম্য ভিত্তিক সুবিধে তুলে ধরেন। ধর্ম প্রচারকগণ সব জায়গায় এ বাণী প্রচার করেন যে, প্রতিটি মানুষকে আল্লাহর দরবারে মাথা নত করতে হবে। মহান আল্লাহর সামনে সব মানুষ সমান। ধূলিকণার ন্যায় সবাইকে আল্লাহ পয়দা করেছেন। "আল্লাহ ব্যতীত আর কোন মাবুদ নাই; হযরত মুহাম্মাদ (সা.) আল্লাহর রসূল।” ঐ কালিমাই বিজয়ের পর বিজয় সাধনে রণযোদ্ধার ঐশী ও মুবারক শ্লোগানে পরিণত হয়।"

বিশিষ্ট ভারতীয় বুদ্ধিজীবি ও উচ্চ পদস্থ সরকারী কর্মকর্তা এন.এস. মেহতা Islam and the Indian Civilization নামক নিবন্ধে ভারতীয় জনগোষ্ঠীর প্রতি ইসলামের অবদান মূল্যায়ন করতে গিয়ে বলেন :

Islam had brought to India a luminous torch, which rescued humanity from darkness at a time when old civilizations were on the decline and lofty moral ideals had got reduced to empty intellectual concepts. As in other lands, so in India, too, the conquests of Islam were more widespread in the world of thought than in the world of politics. Today, also, the Islamic World is a spiritual brotherhood, which is held together by community of faith in the Oneness of God and human equality. Unfortunately, the history of Islam in this country remained tied up for centuries with that of government with the result that a veil was cast over its true spirit, and its fruits and blessings were hidden form the popular eye.¹

“ইসলাম ভারতবর্ষে একটি উজ্জ্বল আলোকবর্তিকা নিয়ে আসে, যা অন্ধকার থেকে মানবতাকে এমন সময়ে উদ্ধার করে যখন প্রাচীন সভ্যতা পতনোন্মুখ এবং উন্নত নৈতিক আদর্শ সমূহ কেবল নিরস বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক ধারণার মধ্যে সংকুচিত হয়ে পড়ে। অন্যান্য দেশের মত ভারতেও ইসলামের বিজয় রাজনীতির জগতের চাইতে বুদ্ধি ও চিন্তার জগতে বিস্তৃতি লাভ করেছে। আজো মুসলিম বিশ্ব আধ্যাত্মিক ভ্রাতৃত্ব বোধের উপর প্রতিষ্ঠিত এবং মুসলমানগণ তাওহীদ ও মানুষের সমতাকে একত্রে আঁকড়ে ধরে আছে। দুর্ভাগ্যজনকভাবে এদেশে ইসলামের ইতিহাস শত বছর ধরে সরকারের সাথে সম্পৃক্ত। ফলে ইসলামের মূল চেতনায় পর্দা পড়ে গেছে এবং এর ফসল ও অবদানও জনগনের চোখের আড়ালে চলে গেছে।”
